The 1st Gen of the Tesla Roadster was introduced in 2008 by Tesla as their first production electric car, featuring a mid-mounted electric motor in a two seat roadster body. These rear wheel drive sports cars helped turn the world's attention to the performance capabilities of electric motors. The Roadster is powered by a 3-phase 4-pole AC induction air cooled motor, delivering 248 hp and 200 lb⋅ft of torque and a 3.9 second 0-60. Production of the 1st Gen Tesla Roadster lasted until 2012, when the model was discontinued. The 2nd Gen is expected to start production later next year. There were a total of 2,450 Roadsters ever produced worldwide - with just over 1000 estimated to remain in North America.
